In a conference today in Orange, in central western NSW had taken decisions to improve the qualifications of Aborigines working in mental health. Dr. Russell Roberts from the Greater Western Area Service made a remark that by the end of next year almost 20% of the Aboriginal mental health workers in the west will be indigenous. He said that he want to provide them with more opportunities for post graduate studies and leadership positions.
Dr. Robert said that many of his staff members were called around the clock as mental health problems is becoming more prominent among the Aboriginal communities. They had been experienced violence and victims of assault which is a common occurrence in addition to the depression and mental illness to the workers. The root of this serious history of trauma & violence is something that the mental workers have to deal almost on a daily basis.
