Growing health care expenses are proving hard to the Amish society of self-reliance and the public support.
Amish families normally don't carry health insurance and forfeit their medical bills out of pocket. That permits Parkview LaGrange Hospital to offer concession to northeast Indiana's large Amish population.
But when medical bills mount into the tens of thousands of dollars, family and community possessions can be stretched thin.
Parkview LaGrange cancer care nurse Lynn Gerig says several of her Amish patients decide to forgo radiation and chemotherapy, in part to spare their loved ones the cost.
She says that while foreigners may perhaps learn from the Amish instance of sustaining each other, it's difficult to obtain best possible health care lacking insurance.
