The Salem city council has raised its voice to the mayor & council members to preserve the health insurance benefits. Dave Black, the councilman brought this issue to the table on Monday night as a result of many questions that rose during the last city council race. He believed that the Salem residents were aware of the health insurance coverage because it’s an ongoing practice since 1960’s. After a survey on other cities he said that they have a variety of salaries and benefits because of this issue. .
Another councilman Joe Hotze raised the issue for election and said that it’s much easier to cut costs than raising new revenue for the ongoing projects. He also said that health insurance is not a “weinnie” item and the council members receive $1,000 / month in health insurance benefits / $500 per council meeting. He ended up without voting.
The other councilman Harold Black who did not receive any insurance coverage admits that he may undertake it if he was not covered. Mayor Leonard Ferguson noticed that council pay is just $150 /month and has increased only once in a month. He justified the health insurance and don’t want to lose the benefits of health insurance anymore.
