The death rate with the individuals with HIV or AIDS is reaching to peaks in Uganda. The health experts have warned that the serious outcome of both the diseases has increased the fatality rate of many in the state. Sam Zaramba, the Director General of Health Services reported that over 200 district health educationists have experienced a colossal threat of the 2 fatal diseases. He made this statement and launched the National TB/HIV Policy and Communication strategy in Kampala over the weekend.
Zaramba in a statement to the Commissioner of Community Health Sam Okware said that the government has reduced the HIV/AIDS prevalence greatly and managed to start over 64,000 HIV/AIDS patients on Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) and no considerable effort has been undertaken to reduce the burden of the TB individuals among people living with HIV/AIDS. The experts say that this also may be one of the reasons why TB is the leading cause of death among the people living with AIDS & TB. They said that this has contributed to 30% death rates in Uganda. All these were reported by the state-owned New Vision quoting Zaramba.
Health experts said that the link between HIV and TB demonstrated the need to have HIV prevention programs and care as a priority concern of the national TB program. The TB program is an important entry point for the ART scale-up as the HIV is an important opportunity for reaching the national and global threats of TB control in Uganda state said Francis Adatu who is the National Director of the TB and Leprosy program. Uganda is listed among the 22 countries worldwide with high rates of TB individuals. Meanwhile the senior health officials warned the HIV/AIDS infection rate in Uganda that has started going up with 130,000 Ugandans infected in 2005 compared to 70,000 in 2003.
