Thousands of Iowa children are qualified for public health insurance, but haven't signed up, state leaders said Wednesday.
About 50,000 Iowa children are uninsured, but most of them can be covered by Medicaid or Hawk-I, government health insurance for low- or moderate-income families.
"We've made a difference, but we desire to do more," said Mary Mincer Hansen, director of the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Hansen and other leaders spoke Wednesday at a Des Moines press conference highlighted by release of a new report on insurance coverage between children.
