In an effort to augment the number of organ donors, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has decided to comprise a section on insurance cards issued by a government-managed health insurance plan in which people could state whether they are eager to donate organs for transplant.
The scheme would be implemented from January 2007.
The names of transplantable organs such as the heart, lungs and liver would be printed on the overturn side of the card, and people could show which organs they are eager to donate in the event of brain death or cardiac arrest.
It would be obviously stated that organ donation is entirely optional, and if a person changes his or her mind about donating an organ after marking their card, a novel health insurance card would be issued.
