As they say, here’s some good news and some bad news.
Let’s start with the good: North Dakota has made extraordinary progress in cutting down the number of children in the state who go with no health insurance. Between the beginning of the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997 and 2004, the number of uninsured people under the age of 18 has gone down 44 percent in the state, according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
However, there might yet stay 12,000 to 15,000 young North Dakotans who have, for one cause or another, fallen through the cracks.
The kids require to be brought to safety, and the cracks want to be filled in.
A large number of the kids may be qualified to get coverage through Medicaid or through one or another plan such as Healthy Steps, North Dakota’s program supported by state and federal funds.
