In the last minute rush to beat the final day, the Legislature passed and sent a lot of bills to the director last week. As usual it was a mixed bag. Some bills we are happy with and hope the governor signs, others we have concerns about and expect that the governor vetoes them.
Chief among the latter group is Senate Bill 840, frequently referred to as the universal health care insurance bill.
It will permit the state to run a single-payer health insurance system that will cover all Californians, doing away with the role of private insurance companies.
Private medical groups and hospitals will carry on providing care as usual, but they will be paid through the state system.
We know medical insurance coverage is an actual problem for many Californians, with millions having no medical insurance.
