Socialized medical insurance not a great idea
Source: paradisepost.comIn the last minute rush to beat the final day, the Legislature passed and sent a lot of bills to the director last week. As usual it was a mixed bag. Some bills we are happy with and hope the governor signs, others we have concerns about and expect that the governor vetoes them. Chief among the latter group is Senate Bill 840, frequently referred to as the universal health care insurance bill. It will permit the state to run a single-payer health insurance system that will cover all Californians, doing away with the role of private insurance companies. Private medical groups and hospitals will carry on providing care as usual, but they will be paid through the state system. We know medical insurance coverage is an actual problem for many Californians, with millions having no medical insurance.
Free insurance will cost city big
Source: fortwayne.comAs Fort Wayne city officials getting ready to pay off more than $200 million in unfunded pension costs, they also would be forced to pay off an additional albeit lesser, but perhaps longer-lasting unfunded cost. The city established a report last month detailing roughly $40 million in unfunded retirement health care costs that would need the city to set aside an extra $3.8 million each year for the next 30 years. A large reason for the cost, according to City Controller Pat Roller, is that retired police officers and firefighters get free health insurance. Roller said the practice isn’t rare, but said offering free health insurance to retirees at all is flattering rarer, particularly in the private sector.

The policy is predictable to launch before the end of this year. But the company is not the only one; Oriental Insurance has augmented the age limit on its policy from 75 to 90 years. But there is a catch it has increased its premium for this age group from Rs 3300 to Rs 7000 per year for a cover of Rs 1 lakh. "Those who came in late would have to pay extra as compared to those who have been there for a long period of time," said VN Bhargava, Senior Divisional Manager at Oriental Insurance.
Fewer Americans Have Health Insurance
Source: wlns.comThe number of people without health insurance in the US has gone up. The US Census Bureau says the number of people without health insurance rose to 46.5 million people last year, but officials think those numbers might be higher because health insurance coverage many times goes unreported.
