Montana childrens without health insurance are growing

Fewer Montana children have health insurance, a recent Montana Kids Count report says. The University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research also produces the annual survey.

Latest statistics show that 37,000 of the states children under 18 had no health insurance coverage. Thats 16 percent of Montanas children, contrasted with the national average of 12 percent. Four years ago, 19 percent of Montana children that are living under the federal poverty income level had no health insurance, by 2005, that figure had grown to 29 percent.

Maryland Considering Mandatory Health Insurance

The Maryland Health Care Commission has started working on a plan that can be presented to the legislature as early as January, which would require all Marylanders to get health insurance.

The draft proposal will create an insurance exchange offering a variety of plans to individuals who will want choose the coverage they want and be able to keep that coverage if in case they change jobs. Employers will pay much of the cost, and the state will also subsidize costs for low-income workers.

Local children's health insurance effort doing good

The effort to get all local children health insurance is yet going strong, advocates described on Friday. The statewide effort will have gotten funding from Proposition 86, by tobacco tax initiative, which was defeated at the polls Nov 7.

But locally, those working with the program have funding from few local foundations and businesses, said Public Health program manager Susan Buckley. These donors have supplied backing for at least two years, she said.
